My ice kept becoming dirty and I couldn't find out why! Just what was I supposed to tell my customers whenever they had requested ice? I couldn't let them have dirty ice; it would be bad for business!
I've attempted to discover reasons why my ice kept getting dirty, browsing my machine thoroughly high and low seeking the source, when all hope seemed lost, I Had no choice but to call up my service technician and get my ice machine cleaned. It was in fact a Friday evening and my coffee shop turned out to be totally booked. It was getting hectic but not more than common for any Friday afternoon. I could see it was likely to be a great evening for us. Unexpectedly Bob came walking up to me from the kitchen. "We are gonna be in trouble!" he whispered to me.
Uneasy, I walked with him straight to the kitchen. He next said to me that the ice maker had stopped out on us. I think it is safe to say that I was losing it. I quickly directed one of the bus boys to the local service station to order one or two bags of ice.
Our restaurant has a Scotsman Prodigy ice maker. It has been working great for quite a while for us, but like every piece of equipment at a pizza place, there's always something... My partner and I yanked the panel off of the machine and instantly I could tell the water pump was in fact broken since it was smoking and smelled like the electric motor in the water pump had burnt up. My ice machine is not under manufacturer's warranty so all of our service problems for the unit have been becoming really expensive. I was confident the part that we needed was the water pump, therefore I guessed I could purchase the part and repair it by myself.
I got a hold of our sales representative from the dealer, who was practically sleeping at the time, he told me they dont typically stock Scotsman parts, We would have to hang on until Monday morning to have the part ordered and after that it could take 2 to 3 weeks for the pump to get in. This was simply unacceptable. We were in no way, shape, or form going to spend on bagged ice for the following two weeks.
I made my associate take control at the front doorway and then I went into my office and closed the door. I slid into my workdesk chair, the faulty part in my hand. "Why does it continually have to be this way?" I thought. I gazed down towards the pump and discovered a little tag at the base of it. The part model number was right in front of me.
I swiftly started up my computer and opened a web browser. I put the part number in the search bar "Come on.... Please!" I pleaded. I double clicked on one of several webpages in the search and spotted the pump I was seeking. I happily doubled clicked the "Add to Cart" button and had become surprised to discover that despite having 2nd day air shipping and delivery; the water pump had been less expensive than if I were to purchase it from the dealer!
I opened up the entrance doors to the coffee shop on Tuesday morning and found the package placed there in front of the entrance. I opened it right up and there was my new water pump. It practically seemed too good to be true. I linked the pump up within the machine and it went right up and started making ice.
I am certain I can't be the only bistro owner who may have Scotsman ice machine challenges. If I could offer any type of guidance on this matter, it might be: At least check on the internet first, after that talk with your Scotsman sales rep.
